I think an attitude of ambivalence is a good starting point, anything more is too much pressure, holding on to tight to an idea is too much pressure…things grow, ideas grow..and if they are allowed, become some amazing mix of wonder and fear that could never have been predicted.
If film is a medium for communicating an idea, or even a host of ideas, then the length is pretty irrelevant. Like they say, it’s no the size of your pencil, its the way you write your name.
Shorts tend to be about one idea, and the best are profound.
You really do have to love a feature. You’re going to commit to it for a year or so, and you’re going to be welcoming it into your family. It’s more or less wearing your ring. A short - that’s just a crazy fling. Or maybe, if you’re a real fast worker, a one-night stand.

Or maybe the act of loving it IS the act of letting it become. I.E. not love of it at some fixed point in time, but love of its essence.
ooh, stunning thought Overdude…
